Dual Citizenship / Reclaiming Nationality

DUAL NATIONALITY

The law of October 23, 2008 which entered into force on January 1, 2009 states:  

•  Citizens of Luxembourg are now allowed to have dual (or multiple) citizenship by acquiring a foreign nationality (please make sure to keep the proof that you acquired a foreign nationality after January 1, 2009)
        
• Citizens of Luxembourg, having lost their citizenship while acquiring the nationality of a third country before the law of October 23, 2008, (before it was enforced on January 1, 2009) can now recover their Luxembourg Nationality

• Foreigners who are direct descendants of Luxembourg Nationals can now recover Luxembourg citizenship within certain conditions

INSTRUCTIONS TO RECLAIM LUXEMBOURG NATIONALITY

 The deadline for reclaiming your Luxembourg Citizenship is December 31, 2018.

Luxembourg descendants can now reclaim Luxembourg Nationality if they can prove that they have a direct Luxembourg ancestor who was a citizen on or after January 1, 1900.

Please fill out he following Biographical Notice, you can refer to the English translation below for your convenience, but please use the following French/German version in your application:

The Ministry of Justice needs to establish your lineage and you must obtain the birth / death/ marriage certificates of your ancestors in order to complete your application.

The Luxembourg Consulate General in San Francisco can only give you general information on the recovery process. You will need to call the above Info Line in order to determine your individual recovery case.

The local Diplomatic Missions in the United States (Embassy and Consulates General) give out general information on reclaiming Luxembourg Citizenship.

The Ministry of Justice in Luxembourg is in charge of reviewing applications and decision making in all aspects of acquiring Luxembourg Nationality.

You must contact the Ministry of Justice by calling the Luxembourg Nationality Info Line in Luxembourg at +(0) (11) 352 247- 88588 (they are 9 hours ahead of time from the West Coast).

Please note that applicants should always contact the competent authorities of their country of citizenship before acquiring a foreign nationality in order to verify whether the law of this first country also accepts the principle of dual (or multiple) citizenship.

EXAMPLE: if you are a US Citizen considering reclaiming Luxembourg Nationality please contact the US State Department before acquiring Luxembourg Nationality  

The procedure of Reclaiming Luxembourg Nationality with the Ministry of Justice has multiple steps and can take up to one full year to process.
