3) DISASTER AWARENESS
A) EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS:
THIS INFORMATION IS FROM THE SAN FRANCISCO CITY AND COUNTY WWW.72HOURS.ORG WEBSITE
After a major disaster, it is unlikely that emergency response services will be able to immediately respond to everyone’s needs, so it’s important to be prepared to take care of yourself and your family. Plan to be on your own for at least the first 72 hours.
Important tips to survive a disaster:
-
DUCK, COVER AND HOLD
If inside: When the shaking starts duck under a table or desk; cover your head and eyes with your hands and arms, and turn away from possible breaking glass or falling objects; hold onto the desk or table so that it doesn’t move away from you - if there isn’t a desk or table nearby, crouch near an inside wall
If outside: get into the open. Stay clear of buildings, power lines or anything else that could fall on you.
If driving: move the car out of traffic and stop. Avoid parking under or on bridges or overpasses. Try to get clear of trees, light posts, signs and power lines. When you resume driving, watch out for road hazards.

B) FLOOD PREPAREDNESS:
Sacramento and the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta’s risk for flooding is the highest in the country because of the city’s aging levee system that has been inadequately maintained. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency for California’s levees in February 2006.

4) THE RED CROSS
Tracing a Person after a Disaster: the Red Cross provides safe and reliable information:
Please find following the link to the American Red Cross Safe and Well Website. If you have been affected by a disaster, this website provides a way for you to register yourself as “safe and well.” From a list of standard messages, you can select those that you want to communicate to your family members, letting them know of your well-being.
Concerned family and friends can search the list of those who have registered themselves as “safe and well.” The results of a successful search will display a loved one’s First Name, Last Name, an “As of Date”, and the “safe and well” messages selected.
