Consular Services

The Consulate General of Luxembourg in San Francisco provides services for US residents and Luxembourg citizens within the Consulate General’s area of jurisdiction over the following 12 US States:

Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah and Washington.

Although the Consulate General does not have official Consular jurisdiction over Canada, it serves the Canadian Provinces that are geographically closest.

The Consular Section of the Embassy of Luxembourg in Washington provides services within the Embassy's area of consular jurisdiction over the following 28 US States:

District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming.

The Consulate General of Luxembourg in New York has jurisdiction over the following 10 US States:

Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont.

YOU MUST SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE CONSULATE GENERAL OF LUXEMBOURG IN SAN FRANCISCO BY EMAIL.

DO NOT schedule an appointment through the Guichet.lu website unless you intend to visit the Passport, Visa and Legalisation Office in Luxembourg City.

Passport and ID card applicants will receive an email containing a link to schedule an appointment after submitting all required documents to the Consulate General of Luxembourg in San Francisco.

Staying in Luxembourg for less than 90 days

U.S. and Mexican citizens do not need a visa to visit the Schengen Area provided their stay does not exceed 90 days within any 180-day period. Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area.

However, some third-country nationals may require a visa. Please verify whether you are subject to a visa requirement.

Where to apply

If you intend to visit Luxembourg, you may apply at one of our Consulates in the USA (Washington, D.C., New York and San Francisco). Please note that Honorary Consulates do not issue Schengen visas.

If you intend to visit several Schengen countries, you may apply for a visa only if Luxembourg is your main destination.

Your place of residence in the United States will determine which Luxembourg Consulate is competent to process your application.

Please note: If you are in the United States on a B-1/B-2 visitor visa, you must generally apply for a Schengen visa through the competent Schengen country's embassy or consulate in your country of residence.

When to apply

Please submit your complete visa application at least 15 days before the intended departure date. Processing time may take up to 4 weeks plus additional business days for mailing your documents. Therefore, make sure to send your application as early as possible before your intended trip to Luxembourg.

How to apply

Step 1 – Submit your documents

Send an email summarizing:

The purpose of your trip;
The countries you plan to visit;
The duration of your stay.

Attach:

The completed visa application form (Pdf);
The supporting documents corresponding to the purpose of your trip (Tourism, Business, Family/Friends, Cultural, Sports, etc.).

Email your application to:

Documents must be submitted as individual PDF files (ZIP files and cloud-storage links cannot be accepted), and each file must not exceed 1 MB.

Step 2 – Appointment

Once your documents have been reviewed, you will receive an email with instructions to schedule your appointment. Applications with missing or incomplete documentation cannot be processed.

Please bring the following items to your appointment:

One recent passport-sized photograph meeting ICAO/visa photo requirements.
A prepaid FedEx shipping label (for U.S. residents), addressed from your address to your address (or another preferred delivery address). (insert Word 3)
The applicable visa fee, payable by Money Order or Cashier's Check (personal checks and cash are not accepted).

Stays in Luxembourg for more than 90 days

Third-country nationals wishing to work, study, join family members, or stay in Luxembourg for more than 90 days must follow the long-stay visa (Type D) and immigration procedures.

If you are subject to visa requirements, you must submit a Long-Stay Visa (Type D) application together with the required supporting documentation.
