• Staying in Luxembourg for less than 90 days

US citizens do not need a visa to visit the Schengen area countries, as long as the stay does not extend beyond 90 days and the US passport is valid three months beyond the date of return in the USA. 

However, non-US nationals and other third-country nationals may need a Schengen visa: Who must apply for a Schengen visa.

• Staying in Luxembourg for more than 90 days

To stay more than 90 days, an application for a residence permit will be necessary and may be granted depending on the final purpose of the stay.
